The ex-wife of R Kelly has spoken out after the R&B singer was found guilty of multiple racketeering and sex trafficking charges following a six-week trial in New York.

Drea Kelly spoke out about what she and her children will face in light of the court case on Tuesday morning’s instalment of Good Morning Britain.

The 54-year-old faces life behind bars after nine women and two men appeared in court to describe sexual violence and humiliation.

Several victims testified that they were underage when they were sexually abused by the singer.

Appearing alongside hosts Alastair Campbell and Susanna Reid, Drea described how her “heart breaks as a mother”.

She said: “I sit in a very difficult place because unlike the rest of his victims, I share children with him, I was married to him.

“I wear two hats. I wear the hat of a survivor, but I also wear the hat of a mother and an ex-wife.

“It’s very difficult for me. I feel my heart is in two places. My heart definitely goes out to the survivors and the courage it takes to come forward and tell the story, but my heart breaks as a mother because this is now the legacy my children will have to deal with and their children’s children.”

She added: “At the end of the day, you cannot walk away from your bloodline. I have the ability to separate and distance myself from it, but his blood runs through my children’s veins.

“It’s a part of their DNA. They can’t escape it even if they wanted to. It’s very difficult for me to sit in that position.”

R Kelly is due to face sentencing in May 4 in connection with racketeering and sex trafficking charges.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV1.
