A DRUNKEN Flintshire man who flung himself down stairs for no apparent reason had become aggressive with police and bit a sergeant, a court heard.

Phillip Higgins, 39, a roofer, of Green Lane, Shotton, appeared in custody before a court at Llandudno. He pleaded guilty to assaulting two police officers on June 19 and damaging a police car.

District judge Gwyn Jones told him: "Your behaviour on this night is somewhat bizarre.”

He imposed a 12 months suspended jail term with 180 hours unpaid work. Higgins must pay £250 compensation to each policeman, £108 to North Wales police for spitting blood in the car, and £85 costs.

Prosecutor Justin Espie said police making inquiries in the early hours in Shotton had heard a disturbance coming from a property. Higgins was injured when he threw himself down stairs.

He hurled a bloodstained item at PC David Millington and a melee ensued. Sergeant Richard Waites was bitten to his knee and had a puncture wound to an arm, Mr Espie added.

Gary Harvey, defending, said his client was “absolutely mortified.” Police had just been trying to help Higgins.

The offences were “more reckless than intentional.”
