MEMBERS of a Flintshire club heard about the important work of a cancer charity.

Guests representing North West Cancer Research (NWCR) attended the recent Zoom meeting of the Rotary Club of Mold.

A spokesman for the club said: "Readers might recall that NWCR was a charity very close to the heart of the late Mrs. Beryl Powell, MBE, who was an Honorary Member of Mold Rotary Club.

"North Western Cancer Research (a registered charity) was originally established in 1948 and operates in north Wales and the north west of England - from Aberdyfi to Carlisle.

"Amongst the Club’s guests were Ffion Wynn Laszek and Charlotte Ellwood - who are community fund raising officers - Ffion responsible for north Wales and Charlotte for the rest of the area.

"Ffion detailed her work with schools and support groups throughout her patch, and her colleague Charlotte made a presentation regarding the work of the organisation which has raised more that £40 Million for cancer research since 2000.

"The money raised funds research into cancer at several local Universities, including Bangor and Liverpool.

"Detailed facts and figures regarding the incidence of certains forms of cancer in various areas were provided - it was interesting to learn that certain forms of cancer are more prevalent in Flintshire than elsewhere.

"Lung cancer is 28 per cent higher in Flintshire than in the rest of the UK, colon cancer is 34 per cent higher, whilst oesophagus cancer is 55 per cent higher in Flintshire than in the rest of Wales.

"Sobering figures indeed. Such information informs the research projects funded by the Charity, and requires strong support from us all.

"President Mark Philpot thanked the ladies for joining us and detailing the work and achievements of the charity."
