A MAN drove his partner to a bridge and threatened to throw her off then took her to McDonald's 'like nothing happened,' a court heard.

Elijah James Roberts, of Caer Road in Oswestry, appeared at Mold Magistrates Court for sentencing on Thursday.

The 26-year-old had been convicted after trial of eight offences of assault by beating and three of criminal damage, all of which took place in the Wrexham area between November 2020 and January 2021.

Rhian Jackson, prosecuting, said the complainant in respect of all 11 charges is his former partner, Chloe Thornhill.

The court heard how Roberts assaulted her in several ways - including kicking, headbutting and punching - on some occasions behaving afterwards as if nothing had happened.

The initial incident on November 27 saw him "kicking off" after rumours his then partner had cheated on him.

When she went out for a walk, he came and found her on the B&Q roundabout in Wrexham and told her to get in his car.

He then drove her to a bridge in Chirk, where he pulled her out of the vehicle and pushed her against the railings, telling her to "jump off."

Roberts then told her he'd "throw her off" and grabbed her by the hair.

But shortly afterwards, he pushed her back into the passenger seat and hugged her, apologising before driving them to McDonald's "like nothing had happened."

On another occasion he pushed Ms Thornhill onto her bed and headbutted her, before clenching both fists and pushing them into her jaw.

The court heard in some of the incidents, Ms Thornhill's children were present - the damage of which would be "unmeasurable."

Following an argument, Roberts also damaged his then partner's TV, bed and poured bleach across £200-£300 worth of her clothes, some of which were brand new.

Ms Jackson said on another occasion he threw Ms Thornhill to the floor and slapped her in the face, before kicking her hard in the ribs.

He had also put his hands around her neck and lifted her off the ground, as well as lifting her by the waistband, turning her upside down and shaking her, which caused her to bang her head on the floor.

Patrick Geddes, defending, told the court: "Mr Roberts accepts the verdict of the court.

"The relationship between Mr Roberts and Ms Thornhill was obviously not a healthy one; there was a backdrop of mistrust and mental health issues on both sides.

"But the relationship is at an end."

Andy Stubbs, chair of the Magistrates, told Roberts: "These are very serious matters indeed.

"The assaults were on the same victim, often in her home when children were present - the lasting effect is unmeasurable."

But Mr Stubbs said it had been decided there was a realistic prospect of rehabilitation in his case.

He handed Roberts six month sentences concurrent on each of the assault offences, and one month concurrent sentences for the criminal damage charges - suspending them for two years.

Roberts was ordered to carry out 35 days on an accredited programme, 35 days of rehabilitation activity and he will be subject to six months of monitoring.

He was ordered to pay £550 compensation for the damaged items, £250 to the complainant for the physical and mental trauma he caused her, £400 court costs and a £128 victim surcharge.
