WREXHAM students collected their GCSE results to find out how well they did after all their studying and hard work.

Despite the top grades across Wales dropping slightly, over six in ten students achieved the gold standard A*-C grades with an overall 96.6% pass rate.

Results are back to pre-pandemic levels, like A-Level results last week. 19.2% of pupils received A* or A grades compared to 21.7% in 2023.

Wrexham Councillor Phil Wynn, lead member for Education said: “I’d like to congratulate all students on their achievements today.

“Teachers and parents have also played a huge part in ensuring this milestone was reached successfully and I pass on my thanks to them all.

“I wish you all well as you go on to further education, work or training. Well done everyone.”

Ysgol Clywedog

Acting Headteacher Miranda Cookson said: “I am so pleased for these pupils;
they and their families have worked hard to get some very good exam results. It shouldn’t be underestimated how challenging this time can be and to see so many of them come though it with flying colours is lovely to see.

Assistant Headteacher Andrea Jones added:  “Around school in lessons or outside doing other activities, this year group were a pleasure to have around.

"I have many fantastic memories of them, it was great to see them recently at their prom and I know that many of them have wonderful opportunities at college and in apprenticeships or jobs to look forward to. We all wish them well.”

Darland High School

This year’s GCSE results in the core subjects of English, Maths and Science are higher than those achieved in 2019 (pre-pandemic levels) and performance is consistently strong.

The impressive gains seen last year in English have been maintained this year, whilst science grades saw further advancements on last year’s strong results with 75.5% of students reaching grades A*-C, and this figure reaching at least 91% A*-C where students chose the separate sciences of Physics, Biology and Chemistry.

Joanne Lee, Headteacher said: “We are delighted to be celebrating with students and their families today, with students achieving well across the board.

"For us, a true measure of success is when we know students have achieved the grades required for their next steps and I have enjoyed speaking to so many students today who are delighted to have gained the qualifications they need for the next step of their journey.

"This is an exciting time for them, they are moving onto their chosen fields in college (including A-levels, BTecs and T-Levels), apprenticeships and employment."

Rhosnesni High

The city’s largest Year 11 cohort were in jubilant mood at Rhosnesni High, as staff and students again celebrated another set of remarkable GCSE results. 

Proud Headteacher, Andy Brant, said: "In my time at the school, this is by far the largest year group we have had sitting examinations. 

"The logistics were huge, but it was all worth it.  Seeing so many smiling faces and watching our young people enjoy their success has been quite moving.” 

“It is their day, they have done amazingly well, but as you’ve heard me say before, Rhosnesni students simply could not achieve results of this quality without the very best teachers.”

“This mammoth year group has been quite superb and we must also acknowledge and thank our incredibly supportive parents.  They will be immensely proud today, and rightly so.”

Ysgol Rhiwabon

Mrs Melanie Ferron-Evans, Headteacher, said: “This cohort has worked very hard to secure success and we are very proud of them. Staff deserve a special mention for working tirelessly to support and secure this success, supported by the school governors.

"On behalf of the school and the Governing Body, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff, students and parents for their contribution to the incredible amount of hard work and dedication shown across a wide range of studies.

"The grades achieved provide certainty and opportunity for the future. As Ysgol Rhiwabon students move forward, supported by the school, the results will enable our young people to further their studies. We wish them continued success and happiness in the future.’’

The Maelor School, Penley

The results at Maelor School, Penley continue to be amongst the best in Wales with around a third achieving at least 5A*s and A’s.

Headteacher Simon Ellis said: “It’s really pleasing to see the pupils achieve such excellent grades, it reflects their hard work and determination over the past five years.”

Deputy Headteacher Katherine Garratt-Smith added: “We have worked hard to
demonstrate the importance of dedication and resilience.

"It’s so pleasing to see the outcomes when their hard work has paid off. Much credit should be given to their hardworking parents who have supported them and us superbly.”

Ysgol Bryn Alyn

This year, the school has achieved unprecedented success across all core subjects, with nearly a quarter of the pupils earning an A* or A in Mathematics alone.

These remarkable outcomes are a testament to the hard work and dedication of both students and staff.

Mrs Adele Slinn, headteacher, said: “I am incredibly proud of the school community and delighted that our wonderful pupils have achieved such fantastic results.

“Our staff work very hard to ensure pupils have all the support they need to succeed, and these results are a reflection of that commitment.” 

Mr Gareth Jones, Head of year 11, stated how proud he was saying 'the results are testament to the Year 11's resilience and dedication to their studies.'

Ysgol Y Grango

Students at Ysgol Y Grango are celebrating their achievements in this year’s GCSE examination results.

The students’ accomplishments are a testament to their hard work, diligence and resilience during their time at high school.

Headteacher Victoria Brown said: “I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all our students and wish them all the very best in the future, whether that is enrolling on sixth form courses, securing apprenticeships, or places at college.

"I wish to commend the tremendous effort of our dedicated staff, who have worked tirelessly and acknowledge my appreciation for the invaluable support from the Governing Body.

"Furthermore, thank you to our parents and carers for the support they have provided throughout the time their children have been at Ysgol Y Grango.”

Ysgol Morgan Llwyd

Headteacher, Catrin Pritchard, who is about to leave Ysgol Morgan Llwyd for pastures new, extended her heartfelt congratulations to all the students who have demonstrated perseverance and commitment in their academic pursuits.
