Here's a list of family friendly activities in Wrexham and Flintshire that you can access via train or public transport.

Despite plummeting temperatures, school summer holidays are still in place for around two more weeks. 

Meaning families may be looking for activities, events and hobbies to take part in which can be accessed via public transport. 

Wrexham has two stations Wrexham General Station and Wrexham Central.

Trains from Wrexham General head to destinations further afield such as Cardiff, Birmingham and Holyhead stopping in destinations such as; Chester, Flint, Ruabon, Chirk and Gobowen. 

Whereas Wrexham Central covers stops predominently in Wrexham and Flintshire along its' route from Wrexham to Bidston in Merseyside. 

The Wrexham to Bidston route stops at Gwersylt in Wrexham and the following stops in Flintshire; Cefn-y-bedd, Caergwrle, Hope, Penyffordd, Buckley, Hawarden and Shotton.

Here is a list of things to do in under 30 minutes walk from train stations in Wrexham and Flintshire. 

Parks/Outdoor Activities:

Wrexham and Flintshire boast an array of beautiful parks and outdoor destinations that are perfect for admiring nature as well as getting some fresh air and exercise. 

  • Wepre Park (Shotton Train Station - 21 min): This 160 acre woodland offers walks, a free children's playground, a fishing pool and a recently refurbished visitor centre. As part of the Groundworks North Wales Group, Our Back Yard, has been running a new weekly Quay Nature Club every Tuesday (11 am – 3 pm) at Wepre Park, Connah’s Quay finishing on Tuesday 23rd August.
  • Green Acre Animal Park (Hawarden Railway Station - 27 min): This park which is located in Mancot, Deeside, and is home to various animals including domesticated, zoological and farmyard friends! Tickets cost £16 for adults and children with toddlers (under 24 months) entering for free. The park is open between 10.30am and 4.30pm.
  • Lanes End Reserve CH7 3FB (Buckley Train Station - 21 min): Lane end is a newly created reserve in Buckley. As part of the Groundworks North Wales Group events there is a free bushcraft activity on Thursday 25th August with one session at 10 – 12am  the other  1.30 – 3.30 pm. Children will make dens, cook marshmallows on the campfire and explore wildlife at the nature reserve. 
  • Park in the Past (Hope Train Station - 4 min): The 120 acre park includes woodlands, wetlands and a massive 35 acre lake which offers paddleboarding, kayaking and wild swimming. The park also offers a range of medieval renenactments sessions for children such as painting, stone age experience and a celtic warrior experience.

  • Caergwrle Castle (Caergwrle Train Station - 9 min): The 13th century castle, which is semi-constructed, is open 10-4pm every day. The castle is free to visit. 
  • Alyn Waters Country Park (Cefn - y - bedd/Gwersylt train station - 24 min): The largest country park in the Wrexham area; Alyn Waters is situated in the beautiful Alyn Valley and is a Green Flag Award accredited site. The Gwersyllt side offers parking, a visitor centre with café, gift shop and toilets including baby change facilities. The Llay side of the park has a large car park, children’s playground and a local nature reserve. 
  • Acton Park (Wrexham General Station - 27 min): Acton Park is about half a mile north of Wrexham Town Centre and covers 64 acres.
  • Bellevue Park (Wrexham Central Station - 9 min): Bellevue is a popular, traditional park within easy walking distance of the town centre.

Indoor Activities/Events:

  • Jemoleys Cafe (Penyffordd Station - 14 min): As well as serving tea, coffee, sandwiches and cakes, this cafe also allows adults and children to do some ceramic painting. Open 10am - 2pm Sunday - Tuesday and 10am - 3pm Wednesday to Saturday. 
  • Jump 2 it Deeside (Shotton Station - 9 min): The first indoor trampoline park in North Wales. Open 12-9pm Monday -Friday and 10am-7pm on weekends.
  • Ty Pawb (Wrexham General - 13 min): The centre hosts art exhibitions, as well as activities for families and adults alike. The centre is running free open access playworker sessions on Tuesdays until August 30 from 10.30am – 12.30pm. These events are suitable for ages 5-15. 
  • Xplore Science Centre (Wrexham Central Station - 9 min): Science and discovery centre with an interactive exhibit space as well as cafe and shop. Open from 9:30-4:30 Fridays to Sundays.

Leisure Centres:

  • Buckley Leisure Centre: (Buckley Station - 25 min) Centre featuring a swimming pool, fitness room, grass pitches, sports hall, gymnasiums, tennis courts etc. 
  • Deeside Leisure Centre: (Shotton Station - 9 min) Centre featuring an ice skating rink, inflatable park, skate park, fitness suite, spa etc. 
  • Jade Jones Pavillion: (Flint Station - 5 min) Centre featuring a swimming pool, bowling alley, learner pool, indoor flat green bowling etc. 
  • Waterworld ( Wrexham General - 13 min) Centre with a swimming pool with slides and fitness suite etc. 
  • Gwyn Evans (Gwersylt Station - 15 min) Centre with a swimming pool, gymnasium, sports hall etc.
