THIEVES attempted to steal £400 worth of toothpaste from Wrexham in a bizarre incident dealt with by a security guard and the police over the weekend.

Wrexham Inspector Luke Hughes has again provided his usual daily update today (Monday, August 15) - this time giving a summary of what occurred over Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

And there was good news and bad news for North Wales Police officers who opened up their 'well-received' Cop Shop in town, but also dealt with a few thefts.

Inspector Hughes said: "I’m pleased to say that whilst we were very busy there have been no significant incidents of disorder or Anti-social behaviour, generally people enjoyed the sunshine and had a great time.

"Sadly you may have heard that there was a tragic incident involving a man in the river Dee.

"As planned, we opened our “Cop Shop” at the weekend. I`m told it was well received and we had plenty of visitors through. The shop will be open as often as we can achieve it, but not as often as to compromise the ability of staff to attend incidents. But, more often than not between midday and 5pm.

"What you now have is a little office/shop on Hope Street, next door to WHSmith and opposite the new Job Centre - this is a temporary arrangement for the summer; however who knows what will happen if it works out?"

Taling about the incidents dealt with by officers, Inspector Hughes added: "We saw a recent theft of patio heater from a property on Benjamin Road and then at around 4am on Sunday morning, two premises just off High Street had visitors -patio heaters and outdoor furniture taken.

"I’m just waiting on the CCTV and if we can’t identify the suspects I’ll circulate, maybe you can assist. No respect for hard working independent local business, and not welcome in our community.

"I have also mentioned previously about my fears around organised crime gangs targeting local retailers. Due to some great work by a local security guard two females from Birmingham were detained on Friday on suspicion of stealing £400 of toothpaste.

"Another store’s vigilant security officer also prevented the theft of 30 bottles of Jack Daniels on Friday - again we believe the offenders travelled into the location."
