A number of past Wrexham players got together to celebrate the birthday of one of the best players the Reds have ever had.

Legendary Wrexham captain Gareth Davies recently celebrated his 73rd birthday and as part of the celebrations, a host of former players came together at the Maesgwyn.

Gareth made a whopping 490 appearances for the Reds in a career that spanned 16 years - all of which were spent at his beloved Wrexham.

The central defender, who captained Wrexham, was also capped three times by Wales.

In recent years, his health has sadly declined as he battles dementia - leaving him wheelchair-dependent and in the Bay Tree House care home in Wrexham.

However, on Friday afternoon, Gareth and a number of his former teammates gathered to celebrate "the best there's ever been".

They were the words of Wrexham icon Mickey Thomas, who said: "It was great to see some of the legends of the club.

"I hadn't seen some for a long, long time, around 20 years.

"Gareth is the best there's ever been, no arguments. He took the club to the highest position in the club's history.

"Memories are great aren't they, to get all of us in one room was brilliant.

"It was great for Gareth and his family, who were made up."

Arfon Griffiths played a large role in organising the afternoon, getting the likes of Eddie Niedzwieck, Graham Whittle, Dave Gaskell, Micky Evans, Billy Ashcroft, Brian Lloyd, Dixie McNeil and Steve Buxton down.

He said: "It was a good turnout, we had about 20 odd past players down. Unfortunately, a few couldn't make it but it was still great to see so many players there.

"There were coaches, groundsman and staff there too, as well as the family.

"It's the first time we've all got together, we haven't done anything like that before and it was great."
