The latest residents of Almost Home dog rescue are all looking for their forever homes this summer.

Almost Home dog rescue, in Nercwys, has seen over 800 dogs adopted and currently has six more on the lookout. The rescue works with families even after adoption to guide and adjust everyone to their new lives.

Could you make the perfect home for these adorable dogs?

Here at the latest home-hunting hounds waiting patiently at Almost Home:

Mya

The Leader: Mya the Akita Mya the Akita

Mya is a six-year-old Akita, possibly mixed with a husky. She is a poundie who was sadly handed into a local vet where she was classed as a stray.

Mya was not in a good way when she arrived at Almost Home. She had wounds around her lower back legs which looked like bites from another dog.

She walks well on a lead and ignores other dogs, however Almost Home said: “We think she would rather be the only dog within the household as she prefers calmer walks where there’s not a lot of dogs off-lead etc.  She listens to correction, knows a few basic commands and takes a treat beautifully. She's now in a foster home where she has been spotless and sleeps downstairs, without issue.”

She travels well in the car and needs a home with a chilled environment, with someone who understands the breed.

The rescue reported that at the vets, she was a star and was happy being handled and passed a full health check. The vets are happy with her wounds which are clearing up well.

The rescue added: “Someone will be so lucky to have Mya in their life. Once she loves you, she gives you her all!  We are looking for a calm household with no other pets and someone who loves going to quieter places on walks. Mya loves her cuddles and being groomed!”

Tilly

The Leader: Tilly the collie Tilly the collie

This is sadly Tilly’s second stay at Almost home after 5 months of adoption. Tilly’s nervous behaviours escalated; however the family did not come to the rescue for any help and this led to the adoption not working out.

The six-and-a-half-year-old has now been placed back in the foster home she was originally in.

She is spotless in the house, travels well, is crate trained and enjoys her walks. She is head collar trained and muzzle trained however the rescue hasn’t had to use a muzzle with her.

The rescue said: “Tilly needs a very special home...people with lots of love and patience and a true understanding of her and her needs. Most importantly, someone who will work with us and Tilly so she can have her best chance!

“Tilly has been a good girl in her foster home.  The basic training plan has helped her, the fosterers also following the plan is making it a lot easier for Tilly to understand.

“She is scared if you stand up fast or move your hand too quickly however, it’s all about trust and her knowing that you’re not going to hurt her. Equally, she has her bed, which is her safe spot, and structure within her life which makes her feel more secure.

“When walking, Tilly can be reactive to dogs, however with the headcollar - she’s a lot better and easier to correct if needed. Tilly mirrors the level of confidence that her handler gives off!”

Cleo and Bailey

The Leader: Cleo (left) and Bailey (right)Cleo (left) and Bailey (right)

Almost Home is looking to rehome Cleo and Bailey together as they are a bonded pair, but would also consider splitting them for the right home.

Cleo was originally adopted from the rescue in 2017 and went to live with a couple who had Bailey already.

Sadly, Cleo can’t live with children - her adoption failed as she was scared of their toddler (and they have another on the way). She’s never shown any aggression towards him but was scared and anxious when he was around. She is a collie cross, who will be six years old in August.

Bailey is a springer spaniel who’s just turned six years old. Bailey is typical of a springer, he is always busy doing something.

The two are happy in each other’s company and love being out in the garden playing ball. They never fight over the ball and they settle well together overnight. Both travel well in the car and really enjoy their walks.

The rescue said: “Bailey is good with people and other dogs. Cleo takes a little time to trust some people. She seems to trust women more easily than men, however, does come around quite well. When on a walk Cleo is walked on a head harness, as she can be a little reactive to some dogs. Bailey is walked on a normal slip lead, and after an excited moment walks well!

“We are looking for an adult-only house, who want a pair of dogs which love to play! They are so full of fun and have a lot love to give but need an understanding home with patience.”

Piper

The Leader: Piper the lurcher Piper the lurcher

Piper is a rough coated lurcher who is around 18 months old.  She is friendly with both dogs and people and loves to play.  Piper has passed a full health check and is house trained. She travels well in the car.

She is an active girl who is fine with children however they do need to be dog savvy children, as she can be excitable.

Almost Home stated: “We are still finding out about Piper so check our website for Facebook page for more details as we have them.”

Lillibet

'Lil' the shar pei is still looking for her forever home and has been with the rescue for eight weeks. She is almost seven and hasn’t had an easy life.

The rescue says that Lil is protective of, and sometimes growly around, her bed and sometimes her food however, this reduces when she trusts you.

She is typical of the breed and doesn’t like change so a new routine can throw her and therefore has to happen at Lil’s pace.

She communicates very well with a few growls and snarls but has never hurt anyone.

The rescue commented: “All the volunteers at Almost Home can walk her and she’s brilliant. Lil adores her walks and is a star when out and about."

Lil has been a star at the vet's, having been spayed and had her vaccinations. Due to her breed, she has her ears cleaned and she allows people to do this without any issues.

They added: “We are fully aware this is a tall order, but it has to be right for Lil. The last thing this girl needs is more movement and stress. Lil needs a home where she’ll be the only dog and an adult-only home with someone who understands the behaviour she shows and is willing to work with us (including the behaviourists) as a team!”
