A MAN who attacked his then partner in the street and resisted police who came to help her has been handed a community order.

John Jones, of the Beeches in Acton, appeared at Wrexham Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

The 28-year-old was convicted at a previous hearing of assaulting Joanne Jones by beating and obstructing a police officer, both of which happened at Bryn y Wern in Coedpoeth on February 6.

Prosecutor Rhian Jackson told the court the victim of the assault is his former partner, with whom he has a young child.

Shortly before 1am on the day of the offence, a resident of Bryn y Wern heard screaming out on the street.

They went to look out of the window and saw a male and female in the middle of the road.

Both were standing up, but it appeared the male was pulling the female's hair.

The struggle continued for a few minutes, with the female screaming throughout.

During it, the male - later identified as John Jones - grabbed her by the wrist and arms, dragging her into a garden and round the back of a property.

The victim attempted to run away, but he grabbed her once again and pulled her back.

He was also seen biting her hand.

The resident who witnessed the incident called police, who arrived shortly thereafter at the property the male and female had gone to.

Initially there was no response to knocking on the door, despite the light being on.

But when officers shouted through the letterbox that the door would be forced open, Joanne Jones answered.

She was visibly upset and crying, telling officers she and the defendant had a verbal argument.

Ms Jackson said the victim didn't report that she'd been assaulted at that point and claimed to have pulled her own hair out - which officers believe she said out of fear.

However she did ask the police to "please get rid of him."

While he was being arrested on suspicion of domestic related assault, the defendant actively resisted and tried to pull away, resulting in captor spray being used on him.

Joanne Jones' injuries included bruising and pain to her ear and the side of her head, bruising to her eye, pain and swelling in her cheek, bruising to her arm and wrist, as well as bite marks on her fingers.

Probation officer Andrew Connah told the magistrates: "He accepts full responsibility for these offences.

"He tells me he's ashamed of his behaviour - he was under the influence of alcohol.

"You will have concerns however that there is an identifiable pattern of offending.

"He has a previous violence conviction in a domestic setting.

"He tells me he had an on-off relationship with the victim over a few year [and] there's no chance of the relationship being reconciled.

"He's come to terms with the fact their relationship is over."

Mr Connah recommended Jones be put on a programme for building better relationships.

Howard Jones, defending, invited the court to follow the recommendation.

The court handed down an 18 month community order, with ten days of rehabilitation activity and 35 sessions on the building better relationships programme.

Jones was made the subject of an alcohol abstinence requirement order for 120 days.

He was also ordered to pay a fine of £300 for resisting the police officer, as well as £300 costs and a £95 victim surcharge.
