The Office of National Statistics has released the first results from the 2021 Census and produced comparisons to the 2011 data.

There are 3.5 million more people living in England and Wales in 2021 compared to 2011 according to the latest census record.

Wales has seen the smallest population increase of just 1.4% compared to England which ranges from a 1.9% increase in the North East to 8.3% increase across the East of England.

Rebecca Evans MS, Minister for Finance and Local Government, said: "The 2021 Census was a success here in Wales.

"Delivered against the backdrop of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the first digital-first census achieved a response rate of more than 96% in Wales, with more than two-thirds of households completing it online."

In Flintshire the population increase is higher than the national average at 1.6% increase moving from 152,500 people in 2011 to 155,000 people in 2021.

Populations differed across the rest of North Wales with Denbighshire recording a 2.2% increase and Wrexham with a humble 0.2% increase.

Flintshire has now fallen below Newport taking the seventh spot for total population out of 22 local authorities in Wales.

According to the Office for National Statistics in Wales there is one person for every football sized pitch of land.

In Flintshire this number is higher at three people living on each football pitch sized area of land.

Other notable points include the age of the population. In Wales there has been an increase of 17.7% in people aged over 65 and a decrease of 18% of people aged over 40-44.

It appears that in Flintshire there has been an overall increase in populations of people over 50 and a decrease in populations under 49.

This can be seen by the 40% increase in people aged over 70-74 in comparison with 2011 and a 22% decrease in people aged 40-44.

Flintshire also has more females as results show that there has been an increase of 5.1% of women in Flintshire from 2011 to 2021, comparatively there has been a decrease of 1.75% in men.
