STAFF at a Wrexham primary school are striking today (June 28) over "adverse management and weak leadership".

It is the first of six days of strike action at Acton Park Primary School - where the staff are said by the Teachers' Union to be "at the end of their tether" over job losses and management of the school.

In a letter circulated to parents on Monday, the chair of the governors, said: “It is with regret that the Governing Body of Acton Park Primary School have to inform you about proposed strike action by members of staff from the NASUWT Union.

"Should the industrial action go ahead, certain classes will be closed to our children tomorrow (Tuesday, June 28) and on Wednesday, July 6, Thursday, July 7, Tuesday, July 12, Wednesday, July 13 and Thursday, July 14.”

“At the present time it is thought (class) Dosbarth Porffor, Dosbarth Menai, Dosbarth Cadair Idris, and Dosbarth Yr Wyddfa will remain open on the strike days. Dosbarth Glas will remain open until 12pm.

“The decision to close classes is never taken lightly, but in this instance, where members of staff have elected to take lawful industrial action, we will have no choice but to take appropriate steps to ensure the health, safety and well-being of all pupils."

The letter added: “We are very much aware of the fact that class closures will disrupt the learning of our children, especially after the impact that Covid has already had and that the closures will also cause huge inconvenience to you as a parent/carer.

“We are extremely sorry for the extremely short notice. We have responded to the concerns that the NASUWT has raised in a positive way and had hoped that this would negate the need for industrial action.”

Neil Butler, NASUWT National Official for Wales, said: "Teachers only take strike action as a very last resort. NASUWT members at Acton Park Primary are at the end of their tether.

"They have faced job loss and adverse management which manifests itself as weak leadership. The Governors knew on May 27 that there was notice of strike action but we understand that parents were only informed at the end of the school day yesterday. This is an example of the adverse management."

He added: "NASUWT has 13 members on strike which is over 76 per cent of the teaching staff. We need the governors to come to the table urgently to settle this dispute."

A Wrexham Council spokesperson said: “We have tried unsuccessfully to resolve the situation with the union who have now called strike action.

"We nevertheless stay open to negotiation with all sides and hope for a speedy resolution to ensure minimum disruption to our young people’s education.”
