North Wales MS Mark Isherwood was put under the spotlight in the Senedd by a group of pupils at the Flintshire school.

Mr Isherwood met the group of pupils and staff during their visit to the Welsh Parliament, and answered questions from the pupils.

Commenting after their visit, he said: “I always enjoy having the opportunity to welcome people from North Wales to the Senedd and I very much enjoyed meeting pupils and staff from Ysgol Owen Jones this week.

“The children are a credit to both the school and their parents. They showed a keen interest in how Welsh politics works and asked me an array of interesting questions about my role as a Member of the Senedd.

“I very much hope they enjoyed their visit to the Senedd and the rest of their time in Cardiff.”

The school held their jubilee celebrations over three days last week. Over the course of the event, children moved around the school, enjoying a range of jubilee themed activities and playground games.

Children learnt all about the Queen, acted out key points of her life, researched the countries that the Queen is head of state for, and delivered a presentation to their class.

They took part in Kahoot - online quizzes about the Queen, designed stamp profiles, made flags, crowns and bunting and baked cakes fit for a queen.

There were old favourite games, such as marbles and hopscotch, and some new additions, such as Pin the Tail on the Corgi.

The events came to a head on the Friday, when all of the children and staff dressed in either red, white and blue, or as a king or queen, and paraded around the village, waving their Union Jack flags.

Large crowds turned out to support the children en route and even passing traffic entered into the spirit of the day, waiting with good humour and much waving, which the children loved.

Back at school, everyone enjoyed a street party at lunchtime, followed by some dancing and games on the field.

Headteacher Katie Macey added: "It was a wonderful week for everyone involved, we all had great fun celebrating together and making happy memories."

The school had tremendous success this year competing in the recent Urdd, in Denbigh.

As a school they won first place initially at Flintshire and Wrexham County Level, with the group recital and individual recital. They also had great success at this stage with their artwork, winning a staggering six first places and three second places.

Excitedly they set off to Denbigh to compete in the finals, against all the other counties in Wales.

Alana Stevens ,Year 2, won first prize for her recital in Welsh.

Year 6 and under Group Recital, sadly didn't come away with a prize but what a tremendous achievement reaching the finals.

Felt work came in third in Wales at the final.

Third place for the 3D creative work on the theme O Mynydd I'r Mor/From the Mountains to the Sea.

Headteacher Lorraine Dalton said: "We were so proud of all of our competitors who took part and delighted with Alana Stevens for winning a first place for her individual recital!"

Bryn Gwalia were also busy performing at the re-launch of BCC Cheerfest over the half term. As a school they have always had huge success at the cheerleading competitions held by Buckley Cheerleading Club, and whilst this year was not a competition, the children really enjoyed taking part. They are already looking forward to entering the competition when they restart next year.

The school celebrated in style on the last day before half term with a fantastic Jubilee party for pupils. The children had contacted Mold Community Hospital beforehand and had been given lots of information on past jubilee parties. This helped them to plan their own food and entertainment on the day. They also made crowns and took them to the hospital for the patients to wear.

Ysgol Dinas Bran at the Urdd: Edie Langford, Adam Wolsey and Phoebe Wakefield.

The school was extremely successful in this year's Eisteddfod yr Urdd, held in Denbigh.

Together with the success of the homework competitions, this was the most successful Urdd Eisteddfod the school has had in more than a decade.

Leri Roberts, Year 7, took part in the piano solo for pupils in Year 7-9, with a fantastic performance.

Edie Langford, Year 8, came first in the learners' recital Year 7-9. This is the first time Edie had competed in the Eisteddfod, a huge achievement.

Pupils from Year 7 were competing in the group recital for learners, and again this was the first time the pupils had ever performed on stage with cameras and lighting. They performed exceptionally, and it's hoped this will encourage them to compete again next year.

The last day of the Eisteddfod was a very successful one for Dinas Brân. Phoebe Wakefield, Year 10, won the learners' recital for Year 10 and under 19. Phoebe had previously won a silver and bronze medal, but this year came first with a fabulous performance

Adam Wolsey, Year 13, was also successful with his piano solo for pupils in Year 10 and under 19. The competition was of a very high standard with 16 taking part and Adam came third. This was a huge achievement for Adam, who has only ever had two piano lessons and is mainly self taught.

The school passed on a massive thank you to all the staff for their hard work in training pupils, and to those who went to support and immerse themselves in Welsh culture at its best.
