MORE than a hundred speeding motorists were clocked by volunteers in May, it has been confirmed.

The Buckley Community Speedwatch Group was out at the roadside eight times during the month.

They put in a total of 49 hours of work, during which they recorded 129 speeders.

Of those, 124 were reported and will receive cautionary letters urging them to be better and more attentive drivers.

Cllr Arnold Woolley, who leads the group, said the highest speed recorded during May was 57mph in a 30 zone.

The group does occasionally come across vehicles with plates that don't match what is on record with the DVLA.

Cllr Woolley has previously shared his concerns that such vehicles may be involved in criminality.

Speaking of May's work, he said: "We had one of those, which we are fairly certain was a doppelganger.

"When all three of us at the roadside record the same thing (licence plate), then the DVLA comes up with something totally contrary - you begin to wonder if that plate is kosher.

"We know they're around and about.

"What we are still seeing at the side of the road is an absence of seatbelts, the use of telephones and the lunacies of children sitting in drivers' laps - as well as dogs roaming around uncontrolled in the car.

"There is the potential for distraction or interference.

"We've also noticed some vehicles in a dangerous condition - with clear accident damage that has not been repaired.

"We saw one of those vehicles was recorded as SORN with the DVLA - these things should not be on the road."
