A Wrexham fan reduced his father to tears after flying from America to surprise him at the Wembley turnstiles.

Thomas Jones, originally from Ellesmere, made the near 4,000 mile trip from Detroit to London for Wrexham's FA Trophy game last weekend.

His dad, David Jones is a season ticket holder at the Racecourse and has been going to games since he was 11.

It was a given for Thomas that his dad would be in attendance, should Wrexham make the final.

Once he knew that the Reds were going to play at the famous stadium, he started making plans for a surprise trip.

Thomas said: "I knew my Dad would also be going. He's been going to the Racecourse since he was a kid.

"I did some "undercover" research on where his seats would be by contacting his friend, Alan who bought him the ticket.

"I managed to get a ticket 10 rows behind him."

David was one of the many Wrexham fans delayed due to the crash on the M1, so it was touch and go as to whether he would make kick-off.

Thankfully he did, and was shocked with a tap on the shoulder outside the ground.

He said: "I had a tap on the shoulder and had to double take, I couldn't believe it!

"It was amazing, it brings a tear to my eye now just thinking about it. Honestly it was brilliant."

It was an emotional occasion for Thomas too, he added: "Once he realised it was me, we both got quite emotional. Then went in to find our seats as it was almost kick-off.

"His friend was so nice to swap seats with me so I could sit with him the entire game."

While the game might not have been one to remember, the day certainly was for Thomas and David.

Thomas caught a flight home on Monday morning, but has a potential future trip in the pipeline.

He said: "As for future plans to come over for WrexhamAFC, we'll see if we make the final."

His dad may be a bit more wary for any surprises this time around.

"He might end up coming to the Grimsby game or the final if we get there, you never know, he's that type of lad," said David.

"I've got everything crossed and I'm sure we'll do it (promotion) this year."
