LORRAINE KUHLER wants to use a decorated domestic indoor bowls season as a platform for European outdoor success.

Kuhler, 32, racked up a clean sweep in the indoor county competitions this season, winning the singles, pairs, triples and fours events to gear up for this summer in style.

And the Worthing star, who forms part of the English team set to compete at July’s European Championship in Ayr, hopes her red-hot form on the carpet can catapult her to the top of the podium.

She said: “It’s been really good to get some green time with my colleagues recently, because we don’t get that opportunity often.

“It’s good to get as much green time as possible so we understand each other and it’s good preparation and we picked up some good points about each other’s style of play in different conditions.

“We’re definitely aiming for gold this summer. I’m pleased with any medal of any colour in any event because you want to go home with something.

“But I always strive to do better so I want to come home with a gold this time to add to the silvers previously.”

Kuhler is not part of the team set to compete at this summer’s Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, with the bowls event taking place at the sport’s spiritual home in Leamington Spa.

But after her European exploits in Scotland, Kuhler insists she’ll be roaring on her compatriots towards glory on home soil.

Kuhler, speaking ahead of Bowls’ Big Weekend on May 27-29, added: “We’re a very strong squad and nation, so there is a lot of talent and I completely understand.

“While I’m obviously disappointed, I wish the squad the very best and I have some really good friends on that squad, so I hope that they come home with something.

“The Commonwealth Games is a massive opportunity to showcase our sport, especially because we’re not an Olympic sport.

“We want as much exposure as possible and for people to see the sport for what it is and it is available to everyone, anyone can play it.

“Bowls does hold a stigma for being an old person’s sport - it is difficult to break those barriers and hopefully the Commonwealth Games will help that because I think the average age in the team will help that image.

“Winning medals at home games is so exciting and the whole country will get behind them, which is fantastic.

“It’s every sporting person’s dream to be out there in front of your nation and it’s very important, the crowd will get behind the team and I will be there too cheering them on.”
