Bryn Tirion Hall School pupil Rhys Davies took on a fitness fundraiser.

Pupil Rhys Davies, 10, has raised a whopping £85 in sponsorship to support a school event.

Some of the money raised will help the school to buy resources and the rest will be to support the athletes. Rhys chose to do (at least) five minutes each day for a week on an exercise bike for the fundraiser. He absolutely smashed it and completed his challenge, thanking all his sponsors.

Paralympic athlete, James Ball will be visiting the school later this month to educate, enable and empower the students.

Children at the school recently took part in a Road Safety competition.

The School Council ran a competition to design a road safety poster, in conjunction with Road Safety Week, to raise awareness of road safety and traffic issues that impact the school.

The school applied for funding through PACT (Police and Community Together), who approved the application, and they received £140 to purchase a banner and buy a prize for the winning designer.

Avalyn created a brilliant poster, which has been turned into a giant banner outside the school. She won an art set and backpack.

The school thanks David Evans from PACT and the trustees who helped with this project.

Pupils at Ysgol Bryn Gwalia have been enjoying new after school activities.

Students have been enjoying some after school activities, thanks to a grant from the Welsh Government.

The school is opening up for three evenings a week so pupils can engage in activities such as boxercise, street dance and aerobics. These sessions are free and include a healthy snack.

The initiative is proving to be very popular with youngsters and places are snapped up quickly.

This opportunity has been made possible by a grant from Sport Wales through their Active Education Beyond the Classroom fund. The aim of this funding is to give every child access to sport and physical activity opportunities beyond the school day.

Head teacher, Lorraine Dalton, said: “We hope that by supporting learners through providing a range of sporting and artistic activities as well as giving them the opportunity to mix and socialise after school, that this will improve pupil learning and wellbeing, whilst also building up relationships within the community.”

Children's own words make it clear the the programme has been a great success:

“I like coming to dodgeball because it's good fun, I get to see my friends and it's well run.”

“The clubs are a great idea because they keep me fit and healthy and they are free too.”

“'I come to club because I don't want to be bored at home and it gives me something to do.”

“I enjoy dance because it's fun and free. It also keeps me fit.”

“Having Michelle from Aura in is really good because she understands the rules of dodgeball.”

The school's pupil leadership team is a group of very dedicated children who work together to improve all aspects of school.

Their action plan for this term includes improving the school grounds and working within the community.

Before half term, the team wrote to the park ranger and were elated to receive a reply highlighting how they could support in the park with making pathways, designing new habitats and planting trees.

Last week, and accompanied by selected children from the Year 2 Forest School's groups, the children set off to the park to meet the ranger.

Despite miserable weather, the children enjoyed making bug houses and used their skills to identify birds and wildlife that currently inhabit the park.

During their future visits, the children are keen to work to ensure the park can be an area for all to enjoy.

The school's Eco-Action Taskforce recently had a visit from Carolyn Thomas MS, who was looking at the great work the pupils had done over the past few years.

She also helped them plant some new fruit trees in the Tyfu Woods with the other 250 the pupils have already planted.

Carolyn also awarded the pupils with their official plaque for their Jubilee Queens Green Canopy Award.

Whilst she was there the MS met up with Amir, a member of the Welsh Youth Parliament representing refugees, a very important role at this challenging time.

The pupils took the opportunity to give the school a tidy up also with a group heading out to do a school litter pick.

Nicholas Brown, head of geography and all things Eco-Taskforce, said: "In these troubling times, this type of extra curricular activity is vital to build confidence, mental health and friendships amongst pupils."
