A nine-year-old from Flintshire has raised hundreds of pounds for cancer research as part of his new year resolution.

Riley Thomas, who attends Ysgol Maes Y Felin in Holywell, was quizzed alongside his classmates about what their New Year's resolutions were on return to school after Christmas.

Riley decided that he wanted to raise money for cancer research, but was unsure what he could do to raise the funds.

After speaking with his mum Paula, the pair came up with the idea of making bracelets. This was decided as it allowed Riley to crack on himself, without needing the help of his mum.

A fundraising page was set up, with a target of £20 to raise, and after two months, the total currently sits at £323.

The Leader: Some of Riley's bracelets. Some of Riley's bracelets.

Riley has been busy at work after school and at weekends making the bracelets and has had a lot of demand from residents in the area.

He hadn't initially planned on making them for as long as he has, but after having so many requests, he has continued. Riley is set to bring his fundraising efforts to an end at the end of March, but that depends on how many people are after a bracelet.

His mum Paula said she was 'made up' for Riley to have raised so much money on his own.

Riley's auntie, Cerri Price, had advertised the bracelets in the Holywell Spar, and was amazed at the response from customers.

She said: "The response has been amazing from friends, family and the local community who have been purchasing the bracelets available via message or from The Spar.

"Riley's been so overwhelmed by the response, I'm proud to call him my nephew."
