The group tweeted: "Large #fireball meteor spotted tonight 29 Jan 2022 at 18:48:26 UT from several UKMON cameras."

In later posts, the group added more information.

It tweeted: "And the results are in. The fireball last night was a Sporadic type with an interesting orbit, in perihelion it's inside Mercury's orbit. Went down to 28km but no meteorite."

People in Scotland were among the best placed to see it, but it could also be seen in England, North Wales, and on mainland Europe.

And UK Fireball Network tweeted: "Last nights 18:45 #fireball seen over #Scotland & #England was a #meteoroid from the outer main #asteroid belt. It was unusual as its orbit took it in past #Mercury which explains why it came in so fast, 31.7 km/s! Sadly no #meteorites survived, it burnt up 38km up."

Social media users shared their sightings from throughout the UK, including Birmingham, Burnley, Cheshire, Doncaster and Wigan.

One Twitter user said: "I was out walking my dog on a golf course in Whitegate in Cheshire and was fortunate to see this! Wasn’t quick enough to get a photo or video though!"

One said: "Spotted in Garswood near Wigan Meteor had a green tail. Where has it landed?"

Another posted: "Definitely green! The missus has been calling me colour blind. I thought it was firework!"

Another another: "Seen this in Wales too! It looked green!"

Some in Flintshire were lucky enough to see it, with members Buckley Residents Facebook page discussing the phenomenon.

One asked: "Did anyone see what I thought was a meteor tonight about 18.50pm over towards north east direction? I only caught a quick glimpse as I was driving and it was moving very quickly? Might have been mistaken but it was something unusual."

One resident replied: "We saw it, it was going so fast we questioned ourselves. I’m so glad you posted this. I no longer feel like I was seeing things!"

Another said: "Seen this too in Mynydd Isa. Very bright."

Another resident added: "I saw it! Looked almost a green colour as is went past!"

Another member of the group said: "I seen it and I made a wish too haha. I was coming out of Well Street heading to Stanley Road and it whizzed across the sky to the left."
