SHOPPING trolleys and bikes were among items found during a clear-up of a pond at a country park in Wrexham.

Park Rangers discovered the bizarre items after cleaning up the pond at Stryt Las Country Park in Johnstown.

Just a few days earlier, on January 18, the rangers had to throw a bin into the pond to extinguish it after it had been set on fire.

Johnstown Councillor David Bithell thanked the Park Rangers for their efforts in helping keep the area both safe and tidy.

He added that the pond should return to its normal state, but in a much cleaner fashion, over the next two weeks.

Cllr Bithell, who is also deputy leader of Wrexham Council, said: "Big thank you to the Rangers who have emptied the pond and cleared the rubbish dumped in Stryt Las Country Park, these included shopping trollies, bikes etc.

"The pond is now filling up again and will be full in the next two weeks. Lots of work goes on to keep our parks and open spaces clean and tidy."

Stryt Las Park along with Bonc yr Hafod is part of the Johnstown Special Area of Conservation due to its Great crested Newts, and a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

Its grassland, woodland and ponds provide an excellent home for all sorts of amphibians - even more of a reason for the rangers to keep its pond clean and tidy.
