A former mayor of Wrexham is to undergo a new look in support of a local hospice.

Mike Edwards, who served on the council for more than 20 years, is shaving off his beard to help raise much-needed funds for Nightingale House Hospice.

He was last beardless in 1973, on his wedding day to wife Kay, and his daughters have never seen him without it.

He said: "I doubt anyone can remember me clean shaven, as it is now 17,618 days since I used a razor, 65 per cent of my life."

The hospice is a cause close to Mike's heart.

Mike, 74, said: "I thought I would use this opportunity to raise money for Nightingale House Hospice, where Kay and many others have received exceptional care and support.

"It was fantastic for my wife. Fortunately it was before covid, and I was able to be there a lot of the time.

"They really encourage you to do whatever you can manage. It's the most wonderful thing that they have there.

"For over 25 years, staff at Nightingale House Hospice have created an environment that gives patients and their loved ones quality time to spend together.

"Not having to worry about the care a loved one receives, knowing they are in safe hands means every second spent together is dignified and peaceful.

"Without support, their specialist palliative care units wouldn't be able to deliver such high standards."

At the time of writing Mike, who was mayor between 2005-2006, had raised more than £800 for Nightingale House but would love to raise more before his shave in January.
