The café at the Maelor Hospital will be hosting a day of ‘Christmas Cheer’ for NHS staff on site.

On December 16 from 10am till 2pm anyone in uniform or with a lanyard can get a free tea or coffee with mince pies and biscuits, including gluten free options.

They are also holding a tombola, which the staff will get a ticket for, and have had prizes donated from all over the local area including two £15 vouchers from Acton Park and a £20 voucher from Colour Supplies, plus much more.

Jenny Griffiths, who runs the café in the Maelor Hospital in Wrexham said the day is a morale booster for the staff.

“It’s a thank you and happy Christmas to the NHS. We normally run five cafes in the hospital but because of covid we’re only operating café 1. We’ve survived it and we want to say thank you to the staff because we see them day in day out.

“They are on their knees they are working so hard. There’s still covid cases (and) they’re trying to catch up on all the things that were missed during covid.

“They get quite a lot of abuse from people who say ‘you’re not doing this fast enough’ but we know how hard they work; we see them on a daily basis and we couldn’t think of anything nicer to do for them."

The café has always done something for the staff each year by raising money for the hospital.

She added: “We usually give them a quarter of a million pounds worth of equipment each year because they know that they’re valued, but we haven’t been able to do that this year because we were closed and we’re just so grateful they’re there.

"We just want to give a little bit without doing anything because we can’t do what we normally do for them, and they need it. The 75th birthday of the NHS we gave them tea, coffee and a scone, and it gave them such a boost, the staff loved it.

“It’s the staff who make us, the NHS, the jewel in the crown that it is in our country.

“Without the staff you haven’t got an NHS. What else could you do for them so were hoping to give them a nice time.”
