OPERATORS of two unlicensed homes of multiple occupation (HMO) have been prosecuted by Wrexham Council.

The authority's Public Protection Team has successfully prosecuted unlicensed operators of a property on Watery Road and one on Ruthin Road.

Christopher Tye and Darren Evans, the joint owners, of the Watery Road property, pleaded guilty and received 12 months conditional discharge, costs of £300 plus £22 surcharge each.

Ronald Stapleton owned the Ruthin Road property and was charged with breaching HMO management regulations and a breach of emergency prohibition order.

He received a fine of £750 for breaching the emergency prohibition order, £500 for operating an unlicensed HMO, a surcharge of £175 and costs of £750. A total to pay of £2,675.

Wrexham Council said: "Most landlords and letting agents ensure HMOs are properly licensed and maintained.

"But if your landlord or letting agent fails to acquire an HMO licence or carry out the necessary repairs and make adequate fire safety arrangements, you can contact the Environmental Health and Housing Standards team by e-mail at HealthandHousing@wrexham.gov.uk or on 01978 292040.

"We keep a list of currently licensed HMOs on our website, and also provide information on what an HMO is, and how they can be licensed.
