A TOWN'S Christmas lights switch on event takes places this weekend.

Buckley's lights switch on event is on Saturday and will run between 5pm and 8pm.

The event will look a lot different to previous years - and has proven controversial as a result.

Due to Covid concerns, the event will be a drive-through - with people driving through the Christmas illuminations before meeting Santa from their car.

Concerns had been raised that people without cars would miss out, and one person described the idea as "rubbish". However, Buckley Town Council, which is running the event, has issued a subsequent notice to say there will be pedestrian access for those without cars.

Councillor Vivienne Blondek, the town's mayor, is confident the event will be a resounding success.

She said: "We're aware of the concerns that have been raised on social media, but people needn't be worried - this event will be fantastic.

"We're all fed up with these measures, but we're still in a global pandemic - the infection rates of which aren't showing any signs of going down in Flintshire.

"With this in mind, Andy White, our events organiser, has come up with a brilliant idea of running an event that will be as Covid safe as possible, while still allowing us to enjoy our annual Christmas event."

The event is free to attend, and each child will receive a gift from Santa. Donations are welcome for Buckley Town Junior Football Club, Dementia Friendly Buckley and The Counselling Hub charity.

There will be fairground rides included in this year's event - which has also caused some confusion.

One person said: "So the council think it's ok to queue for un-sanitised rides, but you can't queue to see Santa."
