A Wrexham based film company set up a DIY skatepark in the town centre for new S4C series.

Earlier this year 73 Degree Films transformed Queen's Sq into a pop up skatepark. Now, as part of a new series of Youtube videos, they're sharing the story of how it happened.

On a crisp, sunny morning in Wrexham town centre, the last thing you might expect to find is a bustling skatepark. But earlier this year, that's exactly what happened.

"We had a fun, cheeky idea for a challenge video involving a giant green screen and the best skateboarders in North Wales for S4C. They loved the idea, but the real challenge was making it happen." Rob Corcoran said.

Rob, the founder of 73 Degree Films, worked with Wrexham Council to make the idea a reality, selecting a day with relatively low footfall to ensure crowds wouldn't form. He also spoke with local police and 73's insurance company to ensure a smooth and safe shoot.

Skaters including Joe Hough, Jonny Craven, Chloe Davies, Ste Thompson and others attended the event, which had a competitive element.

"We had an open contest for best trick throughout the day, where the winner got to select a piece of the park to take home with them. There was some amazing skating on display!," said Rob.

Wrexham currently lacks a high quality skatepark in the town centre, meaning that opportunities for this kind of event are few and far between.

"Skateboarding's always been about community. It brings people together, so it's a good thing I think." Chloe Davies.

Earlier this week, plans were well received for the soon-to-be-rebuilt skatepark inside Deeside Leisure Centre. And with the increased presence of skateboarding at this year's Olympics (where 13 year-old Sky Brown took home a bronze medal for Team GB), Rob thinks it's time to rethink skateboarding in Wrexham.

"Wrexham deserves a beautiful skatepark where this community can grow and inspire more people to take part in sports. The benefits for young people, improving mental health and increasing footfall are clear. So why couldn't this become a regular thing? And why couldn't it be permanent in some way?"
