The Eco Council at Ysgol Ty Ffynnon have been collecting plastic for recycling.

As part of their commitment to reducing waste and recycling, the Eco Council at a Shotton primary school has signed up to work on recycling packaging.

Ysgol Ty Ffynnon has agreed to be a drop-off point for the Warburton Bakery Recycling Scheme.

Children have been asked to bring in any plastic bakery wrappings, and the packaging is then sent to Terracycle to be recycled.

Every time the children send packaging to be recycled, this is converted into points which can be exchanged for money which the Eco Council can then donate to their chosen charity.

This means all pupils and parents are helping the environment and raising money for a good cause at the same time.

The entire school community is very keen and the children are enthusiastic to raise awareness about recycling.

On the week starting November 22, the Eco Council, run by teacher Rachel Keenan, have signed the school up for Climate Workshop Week.

All classes will be taking part in a range of activities and joining live streaming sessions every morning taking part in fun learning activities to encourage the children to really understand the challenge of Climate Change, and how they play an important part and feel empowered to make a difference.

Thirty one Year 11 youngsters from Elfed High School, in Buckley, completed an 11km circular route from Cilcain to Moel Famau, as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Students demonstrated a growth mindset and successfully completed their first walk, navigating their route in challenging weather conditions.

The DofE Award Scheme is a life changing experience, that enables students to discover new interests and talents. It is well recognised and respected by universities, colleges, and employers.

The scheme helps pupils develop self-confidence, resilience, problem solving and communication skills. It can also enhance their CV and job applications.

Both staff and students look forward to future expeditions and the challenges they bring.

SCHOOL pupils put their creative skills to the test in a pumpkin carving competition to raise money for a cancer charity.

Matt Warwick, teacher of biology at Ysgol Treffynnon in Holywell, organised the competition for year seven and eight pupils.

They contributed a £1 entry fee to take part and raise funds for the charity in memory of a late staff member.

He said: “With Halloween coming up we thought it would be an opportunity for the students to get involved and the pumpkin-carving idea seems to have gone down really well.

“I would like to thank all the students and staff who participated.

“It was good to see some traditional ‘Jack O’Lanterns’ and some more original ideas.

“We are blessed with some excellent artists and choosing the overall winner was quite a challenge!

“We look forward to sending the funds to Cancer Research UK once the final amount has been calculated.”

Abby Williams, a year seven pupil, won the top prize of a £20 Amazon voucher.

Lucy Hughes and Evie Hall, both in year seven, came second and third respectively.

The runners up received treat bags containing sweets and everyone who entered was given a small prize.

Lucy Hughes said: “I really enjoyed taking part in activities for school and doing the pumpkin competition was fun.

“It’s also good that we raise money for charity.”
