WORKERS at a cable factory in Wrexham have gone on strike over a pay dispute.

Unite the Union members who work for Prysmian Cables on Wrexham Industrial Estate have today (Thursday, November) started a series of 24 hour strikes throughout November and December.

The first of eight days of scheduled strike action at the plant will see over 200 workers taking industrial action.

Unite said the escalation of the dispute, which follows an overtime ban, is a "result of the company’s failure to offer an acceptable pay increase for its workers".

An employee told the Leader the proposed pay increase of 2.5 per cent has been rejected as being a "silly offer".

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: "Unite is determined to fight for a better deal for our members at Prysmian. This is a highly profitable global employer asking workers to agree a below inflation pay rise for 2021 following on from a pay freeze last year.

"Unite is now determined to fight for the jobs pay and conditions of our members so we will be backing the workers at Prysmian all the way.”

Unite regional co-ordinating officer Tony Brady added: "Our members at Prysmian Cables have not received a pay increase since 2019 yet last year Prysmian Group made 840 million euros in profit.

"Feelings are running very high in the plant at this injustice and the workforce is determined to fight for a decent pay rise."

Prysmian Group has been approached for comment.
