A Wrexham-based artist is offering people a unique chance to produce collage art with genuine Victorian materials.

Simon Grennan, who teaches at the University of Chester, has worked with Gladstone's Library in Hawarden and Aura Wales to produce 18 short animations for the Drawing Blood project.

These were based on images drawn from copies of Judy Magazine, a Victorian satirical publication, housed at Gladstone's.

Now Dr Grennan will give others the chance to draw inspiration from similar materials which, although not rare, are usually unavailable for such work.

He said: "Over lockdown I've been researching and making these new works that come out of the library.

"I've worked with a fantastic team at Gladstone's library and Aura libraries. I couldn't have done it without them."

The Drawing Blood animation series is available to view on https://www.gladstoneslibrary.org/events/events-courses-list/drawing-blood-drawing-poison-drawing-fire-exhibition.

Dr Grennan added: "What's amazing is the similarities between Victorian politics and the troubles of today, and I hope that in the slapstick and comedy of the animations, viewers will see that.

"I want them to raise a laugh but also for people to engage with these images which say something about Victorian life and life in the 21st century."

The background history of animations that inspired this workshop are explored on a series of Tiktok videos on the Gladstone's Library Tiktok account.

Rhian Waller, spokesperson for the library, said: "Drawing Blood is a lot of fun. It's been great working with Simon.

"We have really enjoyed filming extra materials and showcasing the animations online."

The workshop is free and takes place from 10am to noon on October 30 at Gladstone's Library. Email Rhian.waller@gladlib.org to join. Places are limited.
