A classic crime thriller is to resume its UK tour this autumn, arriving at Mold's Theatr Clwyd this month.

Dial M For Murder sees Tom Chambers (Top Hat, Strictly Come Dancing) star as the charismatic and manipulative Tony Wendice, a jaded ex-tennis pro who has given it all up for his wife Margot, played by Diana Vickers (The Entertainer, Little Voice - West End).

When he discovers she has been unfaithful, his mind turns to revenge and the pursuit of the ‘perfect crime’.

Christopher Harper (Coronation Street, Strangers on a Train) performs in the dual roles of Captain Lesgate and Inspector Hubbard and Michael Salami (Hollyoaks) as Max Halliday, Margot’s lover.

Directing Frederick Knott’s Dial M For Murder is Anthony Banks (Gaslight and Strangers on a Train), and he's excited that live theatre is up and running again.

He said: “You can’t beat it. That shared experience is so much better if it’s live because it’s much more visceral, whether it’s through suspense and tension or the collective release that comes from the comedic moments.”

We caught up with some of the cast ahead of their run at Theatr Clwyd.

Diana, you’re new to the tour and were keen to play the part...

"I’m a massive fan of the genre so saying yes was a no-brainer for me.

"Margot is smart and a bit of a risk-taker. She feels very trapped in her situation with Tony, constantly running around after him.

"Then she meets Max and he’s new and fresh and makes her feel alive. I think she quite likes the danger of having an affair under her husband’s nose."

During lockdown Tom, Christopher and Michael did a project together Apollo 13: The Dark Side of the Moon, about the USA’s thwarted mission to the moon in 1970. How was that?

Tom: "I was so grateful to have a project to occupy my mind that wasn’t about home schooling or anxiety and uncertainty."

Christopher: "It was bonkers. We were on Swiss balls in front of green screens, in charge of our own costumes, make-up and lighting.

"It was a hard project to make happen but really satisfying at the end of it."

How does it feel to have live theatre back again?

Tom: "You can feel the energy in the air, and it now feels more exciting and poignant than ever.

"Absence makes the heart grow fonder and it’s been such a long absence."

Christopher: "But being told a story live, in an auditorium with a group of people and the suspension of disbelief that floats in the air, is something else again. I think audiences are feeling that anew and it’s something I’m proud to be a part of."

Michael: "I miss the crowds. I miss hearing a pin drop, I miss the laughter and the applause.

"Stage work is something you can’t beat. You have to ride every mistake and every beat.”
