As the region's pubs and bars return to a version of normality - the Leader is again shining a light on the industry with our Pub of the Week feature.

This is an opportunity for landlords and landladies from across Wrexham and Flintshire to have the chance to showcase their establishment.

Now more than ever, it's vital to support our local businesses.

If you want your pub to be featured, simply fill in our online Q&A or if you would like to nominate a pub, email claire.pierce@newsquest.co.uk.

Step inside this week's pub...

When Lynda Leigh, landlady of the George & Dragon, in Flint, heard the news that the pub, and every other across the country, was to close as we headed into the first lockdown, she was shocked and scared.

“It’s all I’d ever done. I burst into tears,” she recalls.

“The lockdown had a devastating effect on my business. I have been a licensee for 38 years and I honestly thought this was the final nail in the coffin, as I'm sure did many others in the licensing trade.”

But speaking shortly after the recent Bank Holiday weekend, it’s fair to say the George & Dragon are far from slayed.

The people of Flint are important to Lynda, who has been a licensee in the town for 27 years: “My pub is the centre of the community I am very proud that we have whole generation of families that come to the George together.

"It's not a job, it's a lifestyle.

“We have some pensioners who come in for a tea and a chat, and I thought it was awful how they were now in their homes by themselves.

“So during lockdown we delivered food parcels to the elderly and vulnerable – basics of milk, sugar, tea initially.

“The support was so great, we were able to deliver bags across the two high rise blocks of flats.

“One little old lady cried on seeing us at her door, she’d not seen anybody.

“Then because Flint has the biggest beating heart, we collected donations and delivered 500 take away meals to NHS workers on duty, and to care homes. It was fantastic, every take away in Flint played a part.”

That sense of community really shone throughout the pandemic, and now the support is very much reciprocated.

The end of August Bank Holiday saw Lynda have a great weekend at the George & Dragon, as locals made the most of the beer garden in the good weather, and a music festival.

She said: “It was absolutely fantastic, it’s been brilliant.

“We had some local bands, and it was really the first time we’d been able to do that sort of thing.”

Of course the pub is used to being a focal point for coming together, and home to some of Lynda’s most memorable moments.

The pub held a leaving party for the town’s Olympic gold medalist Jade Jones, before she headed out to the Tokyo Olympics, and then her welcome home party on her return.

“The whole town was there!” said Lynda, who has run the pub for five years and previously between 2007-2011

One of my favourite things about speaking to those at our region’s pubs, is finding out about some of the more unusual goings on. Spirits that don't come from a bottle.

Lynda said: “I have a friendly ghost, Armo, who makes his presence known when he's not happy.

“He was a very dear friend of mine. Since he passed away three years ago, we have bar lights near where he sat, and they will flash when we talk about him. Glasses have even been known to fly off the shelf.”

But despite covid and ghosts, Lynda is just grateful to be back in business, and is even looking forward to serving dinners again at the pub on Christmas Day.

Finally, asking Lynda what is the best thing about running the pub, she couldn’t be more clear: “It's my life, surrounded by amazing friends and staff that always go the extra mile. They’re amazing.”
