WITH Covid restrictions easing in England today, we went to the town of Chirk to see if this would influence shoppers to cross the border.

The easing of nearly all restrictions in England means that shoppers there no longer have to wear a mask or practice social distancing, although the wearing of face masks is still recommended in crowded public places and on public transport.

Some shops and supermarkets in England are also still asking shoppers to wear a mask.

Here in Wales, restrictions like mask wearing in shops and social distancing remain in place.

Alert Level Zero

Further easing of restrictions in Wales are set to be announced on August 7, when Wales moves to Alert Level Zero, although face masks will still need to be worn in shops after this date.

There will be no law on social distancing in Wales once we move to this alert level.

We went to the town of Chirk, close to the border with Shropshire, to see if the easing of Covid restrictions in England today - so called 'Freedom Day' - would impact on their preferred place to shop in future.

Would the easing of restrictions on mask wearing in England tempt some shoppers over the border?

Here's what the residents of Chirk that we spoke to said.

Jonathan Webb, 26, from Chirk, said: "Not so much. I shop quite a lot in England regularly anyway but, if I do go there, I'll probably still wear a mask anyway for the sake of it.

"I either shop in the local Tesco here, because it's the closest, or I go to Oswestry.

"I'll probably still wear a mask anyway."

Health issues

Nicola Greatorex, 51, from Chirk said she would continue to wear a mask even when she does pop over the border to Oswestry do her shopping.

She said: "I'll still be wearing a mask anyway. I have underlying health issues and it's just peace of mind.

"We were talking about this earlier and saying that nothing will change for us.

"We'll keep doing what we have been doing. The virus is still around."

Pensioner Sheila, 89, from Chirk, said she was in a small bubble with her friend and that they would continue to wear masks when they crossed over the border to Shropshire to do their shopping, despite the easing of restrictions.

She added: "I will be doing exactly what I have been doing. I will still be wearing my mask as long as I think it's going to be necessary.

"I'm in the vulnerable category and I wish to stay alive a little bit longer.

"I have lived a long time and I have seen far worse things in life than this pandemic.

"I think my friend and I have been very sensible and we will continue to be.

"We go to supermarkets which have observed the rules scrupulously. That's where we feel safe to shop."

Keep people safe

Mushtaq Ahmed, 37, from Chirk, said that he would still be wearing a mask inside shops, even if he shopped in England. He felt it was important to do this and also to practice social distancing to keep people safe from the virus.

He added: "The pandemic has been going on for a long time.

"I hope that if the situation with Covid-19 gets worse then maybe we'll have a lockdown again but it's better to do this and to save lives."

Keith Morgan, 72, visits friends in Chirk on a regular basis and he said he was happy to support local shops by shopping in Chirk itself.

He added that even if he did go to Shropshire then he would still wear a mask inside shops.

He said: "I come up here a lot to spend time with friends and when I am here we shop in Chirk anyway.

"I will continue to wear a mask, even if we do go to England to do any shopping.

"I'm at an age where I still feel pretty vulnerable."
