A class at a Flintshire school inspired to fundraise for a wildlife charity after a cruel act of vandalism, has doubled their original target.

Class 4 at Ysgol Y Waun, in Gwernaffield, had aimed to raise £100 for the North Wales Wildlife Trust.

This was after they learned of the vandalism at Llyn Brenig, where a pair of ospreys, who had just laid their egg, had their nest destroyed with a chainsaw.

Last week, led by class teacher Richard Lloyd, the children biked, scootered, and ran or walked for 60 minuets on the school grounds.

Mr Lloyd said: "It was fantastic to see so many of our children arriving at school with their bikes.

"For our event, the whole school and playgroup came out to support Class 4, providing a real buzz of anticipation and excitement.

"All Class 4 did fantastic, covering countless laps of our tracks, either on foot, scooter or bike over the hour.

"I can safely say they all thoroughly enjoyed the experience, whilst raising a significant amount of money for the Brenig Osprey Project.

"In addition, the event covered many areas of the four purposes, which drive our new Welsh curriculum.

"Our fundraiser was a huge success, we managed to double our original target! Our current total stands at £205!"

Dr Graeme Cotterill, fundraising director at the North Wales Wildlife Trust, said: "Whilst the disaster that befell the nest in May was horrific, it has been heart-warming to since receive so many good wishes, donations and offers to support the Brenig Osprey Project.

"Thank you to all the amazing children from Class 4 for their wonderful efforts - you're an inspiration to us all!"
