Wales’ First Minister, Mark Drakeford confirmed the anticipated changes to Covid regulations that were due to come into force last Monday (21 June) will now be postponed for four weeks. Although case rates in Wales remain the lowest in the UK, there has been a sustained rise in recent weeks as the delta variant takes hold. Scientific advisers believe the UK is now in the ‘pre-peak stage of a third wave of the pandemic’. During this upcoming 4-week period, Wales’ world-leading vaccination programme will speed up second doses to help ensure people get the full protection the vaccine offers. Data tells us the delta variant is spreading much more quickly amongst people who have not been vaccinated and now accounts for more than 90% of new positive cases in North Wales. The best way to protect ourselves, our loved ones and our communities is to get vaccinated. I’m urging everyone in Wrexham to attend their vaccination appointments and make sure they get the full two doses. Booking your appointments is now easier than ever. If you’ve not had your first dose, you can book your appointment online. You can also book your second appointment, providing eight weeks have passed since you had your first dose.

This has been an incredibly challenging period for businesses and town centres generally and its clear additional support will be needed in the months and years ahead to aid recovery. The Welsh Government recognises this fact and has initiated a new £3m pilot scheme specifically aimed at supporting budding entrepreneurs in Wrexham, as well as three other North Wales towns (Rhyl, Colwyn Bay and Bangor) hit hard by the pandemic. Initially running for one year, the scheme will be operated by the Development Bank of Wales, which is based in Wrexham, and will encourage new businesses to set up in town centres. The fund opened for applications on 21 June and offers loans from £1,000 through to a maximum of £50,000. As well as helping local entrepreneurs, I’m hoping this initiative will help breathe new life into our town centre.

I’m pleased people in Wrexham and the surrounding areas are now able to dial 111 to get non-urgent medical advice. 111 is a free treatment and advice service, managed by a team of professionals, available 24 hours a day, seven dates a week. Making sure people access the most appropriate service for their needs will help alleviate the pressure on our emergency services.
