MS for Wrexham

While many of us are starting to venture out once again as coronavirus restrictions gradually relax, we must remember the people still suffering from the effects of Covid-19. A new £5m package of support – known as Adferiad (Recover) – was unveiled by the Welsh Government last week. The funding will be used to expand the provision of diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and care for those suffering from the long term effects of Covid-19. Adferiad (Recover) is designed to stand by those who suffer from long Covid and will continue to evolve and develop as we learn more about the virus. Long Covid is a potentially debilitating condition and I know there are constituents in Wrexham suffering. Introducing this programme, which will be reviewed every six months, demonstrates the Welsh Government and NHS Wales are committed to providing the best possible care for patients dealing with the long term effects of this awful virus.

Last week I met virtually with the Chair of Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, Mark Polin to discuss the key issues in Wrexham. Top of the agenda was Hillcrest Medical Centre (and its branch sites including Borras Surgery), which transferred back to the management responsibility of the Health Board at the beginning of this month. I also discussed Wrexham Maelor A&E department and expressed concerns raised by constituents that GPs were not holding face-to-face meetings, meaning people are struggling to get appointments. I aim to meet the Chair on a regular basis and I thank him and all involved for a productive meeting. I will continue to monitor developments and report any local health issues highlighted by my constituents.

I’m pleased the Welsh Government has granted Wrexham Council £285,000 to undertake repairs caused by severe flooding. The funding will benefit four sites across the county, including Caia Park and Rossett. Having been contacted by a number of constituents, I am sure residents in Rossett in particular will welcome this news as the flooding issues surrounding Darland Lane have caused significant problems for some time. I hope the investment will make a positive difference to the lives of local residents.

My staff and I are continuing to work remotely during these challenging times, offering advice and support to constituents in Wrexham. I am also holding virtual advice surgeries regularly.
