A celebrity chef was the special surprise ingredient for the announcement of winners in recent competition at a Wrexham school.

During lockdown, staff at Ysgol Bryn Alyn, in Gwersyllt, decided it was really important to think of ways to keep pupils busy and try to encourage them to participate in cooking at home.

Teacher Amanda Williams said: "Food is a fundamental part of family life.

"During their online food lessons, we looked at meal planning and healthy food and I encouraged pupils to send in any photos of food that they had either helped in making or made themselves.

"It became a fabulous way of interacting with them and I was so proud of what they all achieved.

"Monday was my favourite day. Most pupils had done some cooking over the weekend and my online classrooms were flooded with photos of the food that had been created.

"I commented on every photo sent in and encouraged the wonderful talents of the YBA Master Chefs.

"This became more and more popular and so Jo Ebrey, our deputy headteacher, ran a competition for a 'Be Kind' cake, and we had some wonderful entries and prizes.

"Following this, to keep up momentum, I decided to do a dessert competition. Again, the Master Chefs at YBA did not disappoint!

"We received some wonderful entries and Sunday Brunch star and celebrity chef Simon Rimmer, kindly did a video for our winners.

"We are so proud of the cookery talent here. We certainly have some future top chefs in the making!"
