BUCKLEY’S annual Jubilee event will take place this summer – but will be running differently due to coronavirus.

The town Jubilee will take place on Tuesday, July 13.

Unfortunately, organisers say it will not be possible to celebrate it as the town has done in years gone by.

In 2020, the major town event which was due to celebrate its 164th year, was cancelled in the wake of the pandemic.

A spokesman for the Jubilee committee said: “The members of the Jubilee Committee feel that despite the tremendous progress that has been made this year, there is still an element of uncertainty regarding large gatherings and social distancing.

“Furthermore, the schools will not be off on that day; the allocated training day was used in February to prepare for the re-opening of the schools following the lockdown.”

Therefore, it is hoped:

• the churches and chapels will open for a couple of hours on the day if possible and in accordance with the social distancing rules.

• people will undertake their own Jubilee walk - when and for as far as they find convenient.

• as long as the situation continues to improve, it should be possible to meet up with family and friends for a Jubilee tea!

• Buckley Town Council will show their support and have the bunting put up in the town centre. Churches and chapels could decorate their railings/lych gates and indeed, members of the community could also put up bunting on their houses and in gardens.

The spokesman continued: “Obviously, we all wish for the ‘normal’ Jubilee – gathering on the Common for a united act of worship, processing through the town behind the Royal Buckley Town band, meeting up with friends, family and acquaintances along the route – but we must ensure that everyone stays safe and well.

“We are determined to celebrate Jubilee 2022 in a special way and look forward to seeing you there.”
