A CHESTER fundraiser is planning to complete 90 laps of the City Walls by his 90th birthday.

The Reverend Canon John Stanley, OBE, who turns 90 on May 20, has set himself the challenge in aid of three good causes.

Proceeds will go towards the Faith Building Project at St Mark’s Church, Lache-cum-Saltney, where he and his wife worship; Chester Cathedral, where his son-in-law is Dean; and to a hospital in Kampala, Uganda, providing vital Covid vaccinations.

The Reverend Canon John Stanley is aiming to complete 90 laps of Chester's City Walls by his 90th birthday.

The Revd Canon John Stanley was ordained in 1956 in Blackburn diocese, holding many different roles within the Church of England during his 72 years of ordained ministry, including chaplain to Her Majesty the Queen.

He recently retired to Chester in 2018, having spent the past 44 years as priest in the Parish church of Huyton in Liverpool Diocese. Most priests in the Church of England retire at 70 – but not John Stanley.

People are being invited to come and cheer John on as he is expected to finish his 90th lap at about 4.40-4.45pm on Thursday, May 20, off the City Walls at Abbey Street.

People can donate to John's fundraiser by donating at the St Mark's Church website at https://www.stmarkssaltney.org.uk/giving. Money will be split between the three charities.
