TODAY is Stop Food Waste Day (Wednesday 28th April) - here is how you can do your bit to save money and the environment

Hisense, global appliances manufacturer and supporter of WRAP’s Love Food Hate Waste campaign, has shared some advice to help shoppers reduce food waste for good.

According to Hisense’s research, the most common reason for making too much food, leading to food waste, was because 1 in 5 people prefer making too much rather than too little, with a further 23% saying it’s often too difficult to know how to correctly portion food.

Hisense launched its PureFlat range of fridge freezers that offer features designed to keep food fresher for longer, helping to reduce food waste.

Flexible storage solutions, such as the My Fresh Choice compartment, allow for complete temperature control over a dedicated portion of the appliance, perfect for flexing to ever-changing household demands.

Invertor Compressor Technology allows for Total No Frost features, meaning users can wave goodbye to de-icing and regulated, even airflow guarantees that food will stay at its freshest for longer.

But how can we reduce our food waste?

An easy way to avoid food waste is to get your portion sizes right. That way, you’re only cooking exactly what you need, when you need it. Hisense have identified some of the most difficult to portion foods – “how to cook rice” averages 23,000 searches each month in the UK.

So, say goodbye to poor ‘guesstimations’ and hello to Hisense’s handy tips and tricks:

  • Potatoes: Adults only need the equivalent of three egg-sized boiled potatoes. But don’t worry: cooked potatoes can be frozen – did you know you can roast boiled potatoes straight from the freezer!?
  • Rice: A mug of dried rice is enough for four adults and contrary to popular belief, leftover rice can be stored safely in the fridge for 24 hours if cooled quickly under cold water and reheated until piping hot.
  • Pasta: Bunched spaghetti can be measured out per adult as roughly the size of a 1p piece for the perfect portion. For pasta, allow around 75g per person and once you’ve weighed out one portion of pasta, pop it in a bowl or container you frequently use so you can accurately measure the portions easily next time.

Arun Bhatoye, Senior Marketing Manager at Hisense, says: “Food waste is on everyone’s agenda, whether we are conscious of it or not. It has a huge impact on the environment, but also on our pockets – shopping and cooking wisely could save the average family with children £730 a year.

"Hisense’s objective is to equip home cooks with the appliances they need to help their food go the extra mile.”
