A WREXHAM man who was in possession of a ‘fearsome weapon’ has been jailed.

Taran Norman, 24, of Stockwell Grove in Wrexham appeared at Caernarfon Crown Court on April 15 for possession of an offensive weapon in a public place.

The court heard how shortly after 7am on March 18, police officers were alerted to two 'suspicious' men on Maesgwyn Road.

Police arrested Norman who was carrying a yellow bag and he told officers there was a ‘baton on there’.

Inside was an ‘old type police truncheon’ which had 13 screws protruding from the end.

The court heard how this was an ‘article adapted clearly to cause injury’.

Defence Counsel Andrew Green said it was an ‘ugly weapon’ but ‘mercifully it wasn’t brandished’.

He went on to say Norman had pleaded guilty at the first opportunity and it ‘feeling far better than he has ever felt’.

Mr Green said Norman’s time in custody allowed him to get off the drugs and he ‘feels much healthier as a result’.

He added Norman was also anxious about his gran who had become ‘seriously ill over Christmas’ with Covid.

Judge Huw Rees said the weapon was ‘fearsome’ and was an ‘old fashioned type baton with screws inserted’.

He went on to say that there is ‘no fathomable reason’ why anyone should have such a weapon other than to ‘instil real fear or cause serious violence’.

He added: “It is almost beyond belief why someone would want to construct this medieval type weapon, let alone carry it on their person in public.”

Judge Rees said moving weapons often has a ‘more serious and sinister background’ but Norman had the ‘good sense’ to plead guilty.

Normal, who has previous convictions, was given a five month custodial sentence.
