A FLINTSHIRE family walked over 1,000 miles in 40 days for charity.

Julie Lewis, husband, Wyn, and their daughter, Ceri, completed the comparative distance of the length of the UK to raise money for Cancer Research UK - a charity close to their hearts.

At the end of 2019, Julie, of Rhes-y-cae, near Halkyn, was diagnosed with cancer of the womb.

But following a total hysterectomy, radium therapy and what Julie, a mother-of-two, describes as "one of the toughest years yet", the 60-year-old is now cancer free.

Julie's experience has inspired her to fundraise in aid of Cancer Research. And on February 22, the trio started out on their challenge of walking a combined 1,083 miles by Easter Saturday.

This equated to each of them having to walk nine miles a day for 40 days - and roughly 350 miles in total.

Not only did they manage to complete the challenge, they each walked an extra 100 miles - raising £3,200 in the process.

Julie said: "The hardest part if the challenge was sustaining the distance for the duration.

"Some days when we child-minded or had very bad weather - we would only achieve approximately two miles and so the mileage would have to be made up in the following days.

"I have full admiration for my amazing daughter who works full time and would walk both before and after work."

She added: "The kindness and generosity shown to us, particularly in these difficult times, kept us going.

Many thanks to friends, family and many anonymous donations made. It's all been heart-warming and overwhelming."
