A FLINTSHIRE community has re-dedicated a war memorial 100 years on from when it established.

On the March 27, 1921, the war memorial in Sychdyn was dedicated.

There was a service in the village hall, followed by a procession of civic dignitaries, children from the school and members of bereaved families led by the band to the memorial where there was a large crowd.

There were then speeches, a service of dedication, the last post was played and the names unveiled and read out.

Exactly 100 years later, on the March 27 of 2021, there was a short, symbolic service of rededication and remembrance. Ten people represented the village and strict Covid restrictions were in force.

Daffodils were the emblem for the centenary and in recent weeks, people from Sychdyn have donated and planted daffodil bulbs near the memorial.

Residents have raised £1,080.46 for the Royal British Legion by making donations for home made daffodil brooches and also for centenary maps on which the soldier's homes in the village were marked.

The memorial was festooned with daffodil bunting for the special day. The service was led by The Reverend Daniel Stroud and members of the community contributed - with wreaths laid by representatives of Sychdyn Primary School.

Sychdyn resident Vivian Williams, contributor to the Flintshire War Memorials website, said: "It isn't going to be the big event that was envisaged but it hasn't half been a great lockdown project and means we will remember them.

"I just want to say a bug thanks to the people of Sychdyn."
