A TEAM of volunteers has been "called back into action" following concerns that speeding motorists have been "taking liberties" during lockdown.

The Buckley Community Speedwatch team is gearing up to return to the roadside.

Its coordinator Cllr Arnold Woolley said: "We have been called back into action by North Wales Police and will be back from the beginning of [this] week.

"With the stupidity happening on the roads at the moment, everyone seems to want to be where they're going before they've left.

"I am getting complaints from pedestrians who are looking at vehicles 70 yards away and, deciding it's safe to cross the road, get blasted by idiots hitting the horns instead of the brakes."

Cllr Woolley said he has seen and experienced similar behaviour during the lockdown.

"My wife and I try to go for our one hour walk a day," he said.

"And the speeds we see from the of the vehicles is outrageous.

"You can't be safe as a pedestrian. "[During lockdown] there has been less movement on the road, and speeders have been taking liberties.

"We will be back out there and the warning letters will be flowing.

"Those drivers can be grateful that all they will get is a letter saying please be a better driver.

"If they ran into a GoSafe van, it'd be points on their license and pounds out of their pocket."

The Leader reported recently that more than 121,000 drivers were caught speeding in Wales last year - with more than 40,000 of those being in North Wales.

Speaking about that figure, Cllr Woolley said: "It horrifies me, but it doesn't surprise me at all.

"That's one reason I bother to put in the time and effort to become unpopular by doing this. "Our team gets a lot of abuse from the idiots - I'm just thankful they are a minority. "We get many more quiet thumbs up."
