A FLINTSHIRE school has celebrated its 50th birthday.

Children and staff at Saltney Ferry Primary School got into the party spirit on Thursday (March 25) to mark the special occasion.

Pupils have also spent the week learning about life in the 1970s when the school officially opened its doors.

A spokesperson for the Saltney Ferry Road school said: "On Thursday 25th March 1971, Saltney Ferry CP School was opened by Councillor Mrs N.E. Douglas and 50 years later we are celebrating our big birthday!

"Like everything that has happened over the past year, our celebrations have not quite been what we wanted them to be, but that has not stopped us having fun!

"The children have been busy over the week planning their big day and finding out about life in the 70s.

"They celebrated in style with a party in each class and a socially distanced picnic.

"Mrs Ange Hett was one of the many children who attended on that first day and she has never really left!

"Mrs Hett has been working at the school now for 32 years. Her children attended the school and now two of her grandchildren, Isla, seven, and Jude, who will be four tomorrow, are now also part of the Saltney Ferry family.

"Over the past 50 years there have been many changes but one thing will always remain the same – Saltney Ferry is a friendly, family focused school which is very much part of the community.

"The school walls will have heard so much laughter, seen so much nurture and growth, and the spirit and warmth of Saltney Ferry Primary School will continue to remain strong.

"Here’s to the next 50 years!"
