APRIL 22 1978: Wrexham clinch promotion.

Having agonisingly missed out on a place in the second division the previous season, Arfon Griffiths' Wrexham were not going to be denied this time and they clinched the title with a fantastic 7-1 victory over Rotherham United at The Racecourse.

Graham Whittle led the way with a hat-trick while John Lyons, Mickey Thomas, Bobby Shinton and Les Cartwright were also on target as Wrexham won promotion in style.

And the photos from the day speak volumes, capturing the elation of players and fans alike.

We asked members of our Local Bygones Facebook group if they were there, many were, and remember it well...

Paul Jones: "I was in the Mold Road paddock that day. I was with a friend from Oregon who had never seen a footie game before, she thought we were all mad."

Ken Jones: "I was at that game. We used to go to The Miners straight afterwards and I'd meet my girlfriend later in the evening.

"I went to ring her and there must have been 20 people in the queue for the phone.

"More or less every telephone conversation started with the words 'have you heard the score?'."

Lynn Alison: "I was in the Yale stand, my dad had bought me a season ticket for that year."

Rob Mahrenholz: "Pint in the WFC Social Club at half time and a few more at full time! I remember it well."

Phil Jones: "Yes, I was on the Kop."

Anthony Price: "They opened the gate by the Turf and we all went on the pitch."

Eifion Parry: "I was in there somewhere amongst the mob of fans. When did the Preston fans pile in to the paddock hoping for the game to go both our way. And they went up with us.

"Preston fans at the final whistle singing 'There's only one Wrexham FC'. Did the swap of scarves when we went over the barrier."

Jackie Smith: "I was there too, great times."

Bryn Thomas: "I was at the back of the Kop. What a game."

Steve Boothby: "I was there, great atmosphere."

Martin Victor Griffiths: "I was in the old Mold Road paddock with some Preston fans, who needed us to win for them to go up as well."

And finally, Jason Lewis said what many are thinking: "Never thought we would ever see those scenes again at that level of league football. But I guess we can realistically start dreaming again."
