By Mark Isherwood MS for North Wales

Although this month’s Wales Fiscal Analysis Report states that the Welsh Government has approximately £1.3 billion unallocated, the Finance Minister’s subsequent announcement of £380m business relief stated that this “makes full use of the consequential funding for Wales resulting from the Chancellor’s Budget on 3 March”. I therefore asked her to explain this apparent difference, and emphasised the need for wider business support within a roadmap out of lockdown.

I also asked her what plans she has to make funds available for brave, budding business entrepreneurs otherwise unable to access affordable finance, quoting charity Purple Shoots, which said “they have kept going in the face of incredible hardship, many with no help at all apart from the repayment holiday”.

The Welsh Secretary has said the UK Shared Prosperity Fund will “provide opportunities for Wales to do even better than it has previously done in terms of funding streams”, but the First Minister refused to acknowledge this when I questioned him about it.

I called for an urgent Welsh Government Statement on support for outdoor education providers after the sector told me they have “reached a critical point”, having been unable to trade for a full 12 months, and criticised the “shambolic” way they are being treated by the Welsh Government.

During ‘Topical Questions’ I spoke of the need to make streets as safe as possible for women and girls, and highlighted measures in the UK Government’s Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill which should help achieve this.

Online meetings included the Welsh Parliament’s Finance and Business Committees, Cross Party Groups on Diabetes, and the Armed Forces and Cadets, the British Deaf Association, ABSLTA (Association of British Sign Language Teachers and Assessors), and Age Cymru’s fantastic ‘Hope Project’ in Flintshire and Wrexham.

Other online engagements included Race Council Cymru ‘Zero Tolerance to Racism in Wales’ campaign launch, briefing on the North Wales Road Schemes and Chwarae Teg's LeadHerShip event with my mentee, a young woman from Wrexham.
