A LOCAL man will continue to honour his dad’s legacy and work to make a difference in the community he served.

Sadly, earlier this year, Cllr Kevin Hughes of Gwernymynydd died after a battle with coronavirus in January.

Tributes poured in for the former police officer and journalist who leaves behind wife, Sally, with whom he shares three sons and seven grandchildren.

In February, son Andy Hughes continued Kevin’s community work by dedicating a blood donation in his memory that would have been his dad’s 100th.

Now, Andy wants to officially make a difference – and will be standing as a candidate to take his dad’s place on the local council.

Declaring his decision on social media, Andy told a local resident’s group: “It's with absolute pride, but with also a hint of nerves, that I am officially announcing that I will be standing to carry on my Dad's amazing work in the Gwernymynydd and Nercwys ward as an Independent on the by election May 6.

“The local community of Gwernymynydd and Nercwys meant the world to Dad, as it does to me, so I aim to carry on his vision and beliefs to enhance an already amazing place further.”

In the post, he admitted it will not be easy following in his dad’s footsteps but made a commitment to the community.

He continued: “Will I work tirelessly to ensure his legacy is completed, his work, his drive will be carried on for all of the community? You bet!”

Andy gave thanks to Nancy Matthews and Vicki Shinks - who he credits a being “a huge support” in putting together his campaign.
