The school held exciting events throughout the day for last week's World Book Day.

Children dressed up as their favourite characters, made even more exciting as this was the first day all of Foundation Phase were with their friends.

The pandemic did not stop the junior department, as all staff read a couple of pages of a book to send out via Google Classroom.

The children gave it a good go trying to recognise which member of staff was reading certain pages.

They also held sessions via Google Meet, where the children were encouraged to dress up.

St Anthony’s Catholic Primary School, Saltney

The children of St Anthony’s took part in the British Heart Foundation Elf Kick fundraiser back in December.

Even though it was during the middle of a pandemic, a lot of money was raised. The children were sponsored by friends and family to take part in daily challenges for 12 days.

Headteacher John Morgan and some of the children are pictured with a cheque for £509, which has been sent to the British Heart Foundation.

Mr Morgan added: "We can always rely on our parents, even in these tough times."

Adam Fletcher, head of BHF Cymru, said: “A huge well done and our thanks to everyone at St Anthony’s Catholic Primary School from all of us at the BHF.

"Heart and circulatory diseases cause around 25 deaths each day in Wales. Our research has revolutionised treatments for people living with these conditions and it’s thanks to your support that we’re able to continue to fund research so we can beat heartbreak forever.”

Rhosddu Primary School

Recently the school held a virtual Eisteddfod and invited children and parents, along with Dwynwen Jones and Buddug Selway-Jones (advisory teachers for Welsh) to join in via Google Meet.

Dwynwyn and Buddug said: "'Diolch yn fawr iawn for the invitation to join your virtual Eisteddfod, we both thoroughly enjoyed being part of your Dydd Gwyl Dewi celebration.

"Can we also congratulate all the pupils who competed in all nine categories and a special llongyfarchiadau goes to Madog , the winning house.

"Selecting the winners must have been such a difficult task given the high standards that we saw during the afternoon.

"Llongyfarchiadau also to all the staff at Rhosddu that made the Eisteddfod possible despite these challenging times."

Thomas Owen, deputy headteacher, said: "I have only been at the school since January and I was blown away by the standard of entries, especially during these uncertain times.

"The children here have given their all and have not let the pandemic stop them.

"All the staff at the school have worked ever so hard to ensure every child experienced the celebration, whether it be through the virtual Eisteddfod or activities in school."

The children were given a variety of categories the week before using Google Classroom, which they have been using during the pandemic to complete their online distant learning.
