Wrexham's Carnival of Words

Sir Michael Morpurgo's moving story, The Mozart Question, has now been adapted for the stage by award-winning playwright, Vicki Berwick. Join us for this exclusive Carnival of Words conversation between Vicki and Michael, about the adaptation and the background to the novel itself - a moving tale of secrets and survival bound together by the power of music. And maybe their conversation might just stray into one or two other revelations, as well. Sir Michael's book The Mozart Question is the tale of Lesley who is sent to Venice to interview world-renowned violinist Paolo Levi on his 50th birthday. She is told that she can ask him anything at all - except The Mozart Question. But it is Paolo himself who decides that the time has come for the truth to be told. And so follows the story of his parents in a Jewish concentration camp, forced to play Mozart violin concerti for the enemy; how they watched fellow Jews being led off to their deaths and knew that they were playing for their lives. As the story unfolds, the journalist begins to understand the full horror of war - and how one group of musicians survived using the only weapon they had. This online event forms part of a highly entertaining programme which has been put together for one of Wales' premier literary festivals. Book review

House of Correction by Nicci French

House of Correction by Nicci French

House of Correction by Nicci French

This is a beautifully written novel by Nicci French, the pseudonym for the writing partnership of journalists Nicci Gerrard and Sean French. It deals with prejudice, loneliness and fighting spirit. Everyone knows Tabitha killed Stuart Rees - why else would his dead body be found in her shed? So now she is in prison, awaiting trial. Coming back to the remote coastal village where she grew up was a mistake. She didn't fit in then, and she doesn't fit in now. That day is such a blur, she can't remember clearly what happened. There is something she is missing, something important. She only knows one thing; she is not capable of murder and the only one she can trust to help her out of this situation is herself. So she must fight against the odds. This novel is a fascinating combination of an against-the-odds legal thriller, and a Miss Marple whodunnit. Tabitha becomes the amateur sleuth who is, herself, the prime suspect and has to conduct her investigation from jail. This clever courtroom drama is shocking, twisty and utterly compelling.
