SCHOOLS across Wrexham continue to plan and prepare, as more children gradually return to the classroom.

Foundation phase pupils (nursery, reception, years 1 and 2) have been gradually returning since February 25 (a few days after other parts of Wales where coronavirus levels were lower).

Since then, things have improved significantly across the country, and Welsh Government has confirmed that more children will be able to return from March 15.

Here’s a reminder of the key return dates

  • All other primary school children (years 3, 4, 5 and 6) will be back in school by March 15.
  • Secondary pupils in years 11 and 13 (exam years) will also be back on March 15, along with some pupils in years 10 and 12 who are taking exams.
  • All secondary pupils will be back in school full-time from April 12 (after the Easter holidays).
  • Schools may be able to offer a check-in session for years 7, 8 and 9 prior to Easter. If this is the case, your school will be in touch with details.

Councillor Phil Wynn, Wrexham Council’s lead member for education, said: "We’re very pleased to see children gradually returning to classrooms in Wrexham.

“The return of foundation phase pupils has gone really well, and seeing more children return from March 15 will be another encouraging step forward.

“Schools will be keeping parents informed about arrangements, and we hope that pupils enjoy getting back in the classroom and seeing their teachers and classmates again.”

As more children return, parents are also being asked to help keep schools open by following safety guidelines.

Councillor Wynn added: “Please avoid car-sharing with other households, wear a face mask when dropping off and picking up your child, and try not to hang about the school gates talking to other parents.

“Please also remember that school ‘bubbles’ only apply in school, and children shouldn’t be mixing in groups outside of school premises.

"Current restrictions in Wales state that no more than four people from two different households can meet to exercise outdoors.

“I’d like to thank children, parents and school staff for everything they’re doing to help keep our classrooms safe.

“If we all keep following the rules, we can help keep schools open and hopefully things will gradually start to feel more normal over the coming months.”
