A NURSE at a Wrexham hospice is hoping 2021 is the year she gets to celebrate her graduation and welcome a new trainee on to the wards.

Kayley Mulley, is the first graduate from Nightingale House Hospice’s Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) mentorship scheme. And the good news is that the hospice will accept its second student later this year.

The ANP course bridges the gap between clinical, like nurses, and medical staff, such as doctors and means those who qualify can relieve pressure points within the team, and are qualified to look and deal with patients who have more complex needs.

Students gain a Master’s Degree through Glyndwr University, following the three year course and are mentored by ANP Kathi Ellis and Dr Nicola Wilson on the ward and once a week at Glyndwr University.

Kayley, has been a nurse at the hospice for 12 years and says the mentorship programme has been a positive experience, with the hospice team getting behind her to support her. She says she feels very honoured to have been the first graduate of the scheme.

Kayley said: “It is a great opportunity to have had but without the support of my mentor Kathi, the ward staff and my tutors at Glyndwr University it would have been so much harder. Nothing has been too much trouble as it can be a daunting experience to return to study after such a long time.

“If there are nurses out there who would like to apply I can only say it will be an amazing experience and it will add another dimension to a job that offers so many rewards.

“Working in the hospice is a privilege. Whilst we are known for offering end of life care we are also there to support those with life-limiting illnesses and chronic cancers, as and when they need us, whether that is through regular physiotherapy, patient centred care or a listening ear.”

Kathi Ellis, ANP and Mentor at Nightingale House said: “We are delighted that Kayley has graduated through the new programme and we hope we are able to help her celebrate once lockdown restrictions are lifted. It has been a privilege to support Kayley through the training process and watch her grow in her abilities and confidence. On behalf of everyone we would like to Congratulate her on her amazing achievement to this exciting, new and challenging role.”

Applications for the next ANP Mentor Scheme at Nightingale House Hospice will open shortly.
